@adders They sort-of did this when they announced that the Watch will work with existing hardware to do synced fitness stuff and the reaction I saw was mostly "yeah but most hardware-makers won't implement that" so IDK... maybe the ecosystem of consumer tech at large is inevitably moving into an age of silos only?
